Before founding Archiboo, Baillieu was the editor of UK architecture titles Building Design and RIBA Journal. She was interested in a new kind of dialogue about architecture that would explore the key drivers of a profession undergoing huge change. The Great Recession fueled many changes in how we practice architecture, and it follows that how we write and speak about architecture would change as well.

Archiboo has expanded to capture a variety of conversations about design and the social & economic frameworks that produce it. Archiboo produces the Architect Pitch, the Architect Web Awards, the Small Site conference, and Independent Developer Masterclasses with Rare Space.

In 2021 Amanda launched the Activism Award to reward a group or individual that is addressing one of the built environment’s pressing challenges from issues of inequality and diversity to homelessness. In its first year, the award was won by Amy Francis-Smith, who speaks up for disabled people and the discrimination many of them face within the current housing market.

The Activism Award, supported by SOM and Buro Happold, is open to all practices and individuals who are striving for a better future – not just for the industry itself but for the wider world. The Archiboo Awards now include categories for podcasts, community engagement, and innovation alongside categories for design, film, social media, storytelling, written content, and user experience.

Amanda is currently writing a book with Gus Zogolovitch on architect developers which will be published by RIBA Publishing in 2023.

We were fortunate enough to have Amanda on our podcast Social Design Insights, where she spoke with us about how design media is and needs to change. Have a listen at the link above.

107 | In Defense of Slowness https://currystonefoundation.org/podcast/107-in-defense-of-slowness/ Thu, 21 Mar 2019 08:00:46 +0000 https://currystonefoundation.org/?post_type=podcast&p=3449 Spencer Bailey is a writer, editor, journalist & strategist, currently the editor-at-large of the book publisher Phaidon and a contributing editor at Town & Country magazine. Spencer joins us to discuss concepts of ‘slow’ media, and how to be more conscientious about the media we consume.

Bailey has become a vocal advocate for the practice of slow design and slow media, an idea itself that has recently accelerated with the publication of books like Slow Media: Why Slow is Satisfying, Sustainable, and Smart by Jennifer Rauch. Bailey, Rauch and others increasingly make the case that the speed at which media is made, and the speed at which it is consumed have potentially negative side effects. Having a new abundance of information is a wonderful tool, but there has to also be an emphasis on media that’s made conscientiously. He co-founded The Slowdown, a media company that curates stories from across the cultural landscape and cuts through the information noise all around to present relevant perspectives. He also hosts Slowdown’s Time Sensitive podcast, where he interviews leading personalities on their life viewed through the lens of time, and the At A Distance podcast, where he calls on leading scientists and technologists, artists and climate activists to zoom out and look at some of the planet’s most pressing issues.

Over the course of his career, Bailey has interviewed hundreds of leading architects, artists, designers, and others, including David Adjaye, Tadao Ando, Frank Gehry, Zaha Hadid, Ian Schrager, and Kanye West. He wrote and edited the book Tham ma da: The Adventurous Interiors of Paola Navone in 2016 about the work of designer Paola Navone. At Surface, Bailey helped launch the Design Dialogues live conversation series, of which he was a frequent moderator, and the creative agency Surface Studios.

Bailey is the co-chair of the Board of Trustees at the Noguchi Museum in Queens, New York, and and serves on the New York honorary committee of L’École, School of Jewelry Arts, which is supported by Van Cleef & Arpels. In 2023, he was named to the Wallpaper USA 300 list of “talents that are forging new paths through America’s design landscape.”

We had a chance to catch up with Spencer on our podcast Social Design Insights. Have a listen at the link above.

Diana’s interest in the built environment comes from her personal experiences and identity. Her father has low vision, a disability that prevents him from getting a driver’s license. When she was young, they took the bus everywhere to get around, not owning a car until she was around five or six. She learned of all the ways cities did not work for her family, and that in order for those things to change, she needed to speak up. She decided to learn more about why cities are designed as they are, hoping to eventually influence them through her work.

Today, Diana is an accomplished storyteller and has produced stories in many forms, including articles, videos, moderated panels, and live events. Her work covers architecture, design, urbanism, technology, and culture, and throughout, she maintains a pointed focus on the social ramifications of design work.

Diana is currently the Senior Story Producer at Curbed. She was formerly a writer at Fast Company and a Senior Editor at Dwell.

We were fortunate to have Diana on Social Design Insights, where she discussed with host Eric Cesal the ways in which journalists can spark new insights through their choices. Have a listen at the link above.

Harris’ work grew out of the frustration he encountered when he set out to profile the history of African American graphic designers. Instead of finding the information he needed to continue, he was met with a concerning lack of academic resources chronicling the work of black designers. His subsequent research led him to Cornell, Chicago, and eventually to his current position as a teaching fellow at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Throughout his career, Harris has continued to chronicle the history of African Americans in graphic design. Recently, he developed his work into an exhibition “As, Not For: Dethroning Our Absolutes,” intending to share a spectrum of African American culture and identities. The exhibit contains work from both contemporary film & music, as well as infographics conceived by W.E.B. Dubois. The exhibition was designed in four sections: Parties & Protests, Advertising & Commerce, Black Data, and Musicality. The structure of the exhibit calls attention to the fact that the work of African Americans has been consistently excluded from traditional narratives about the history of graphic design. Moreover, it challenges the very concept of graphic design as an elite, salon-based art form. The designers highlighted by Harris in some cases ran elite design advertising agencies, while in other cases were self-taught flyer designers. In every case, the designers were exploring, creating and recombining different schools of graphic design theory, and using them to represent dimensions of the African American experience.

Currently, Harris takes on selected freelance projects focusing on arts, culture, advocacy, and community. In addition to his teaching fellow post, he is also the Design Director at Civic Nation.

We were fortunate to catch up with Jerome on Social Design Insights between exhibitions and he walked us through the genesis of the project as well as his ongoing research. Have a listen.

103 | Considering Just Transit for a Just City https://currystonefoundation.org/podcast/103-considering-just-transit-for-a-just-city/ Thu, 21 Feb 2019 08:00:24 +0000 https://currystonefoundation.org/?post_type=podcast&p=3391 Alissa Walker is a pedestrian activist, urbanist and journalist who writes on urban issues in Los Angeles. Alissa joins us to talk about the walkability of cities, sustainable transportation and development.

The post 103 | Considering Just Transit for a Just City appeared first on Curry Stone Foundation.

Alissa Walker aims to connect people with where they live through writing, speaking, and walking. Her insights are hallmarked by an unusual practice: exploring Los Angeles on foot. Understanding the city through the lens of a pedestrian has led to deep and broad insights into contemporary urbanism.

While most cities privilege automobiles to some degree, the sprawl of Los Angeles combined with the lacking public transportation makes it almost necessary to have a car. As a result, the city is infamous for its bad traffic and long commute times. A cycle begins in which construction is done and improvements are made to infrastructure for the sake of cars, disallowing any other mode of transportation, including walking.

As a result of car culture – in LA and elsewhere – many experience architecture and cities at the speed of traffic, losing important details in the process. Creating a healthy and equitable city is an ongoing process, requiring regular examination and critique.

Previously, Walker has written for numerous publications including Dwell, Fast Company, GOOD, Gizmodo, and the New York Times. She has been named a USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Fellow for her writing on design and urbanism and Journalist of the Year by Streets blog Los Angeles. In 2015, she received the Design Advocate award from the LA chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Currently, Walker is the Urbanism Editor at Curbed, which focuses on trends in development in real estate, architecture, design, and urbanism in New York and all over the world. She authors the column, “Word on the Street.” In addition, she co-hosts the “LA Podcast,” a weekly news and politics podcast.

We were fortunate to have Alissa join us on Social Design Insights, to talk about transit accessibility, inequality and making change.
